Hurricane Laura

A killer hurricane named Laura

wrecked homes, fauna, and flora.

Roaring across the Gulf Coast,

raining and blowing, doing her utmost

to be remembered as a horror!

Hurricane Laura made landfall in Louisiana, US, on 8/27/20, reportedly the strongest hurricane ever recorded there. After causing widespread destruction, and six reported deaths, it was downgraded to a tropical storm and is currently headed north along the Atlantic coast.

    1. Hannah, I appreciate your sharing your thoughts on my poem. I am so glad you liked it. I feel bad for those whose homes were damaged by the storm. They will have to find someplace to live. A shelter in a school or church basement doesn’t sound like a very safe option with covid19 around

      1. You’re most welcome! It’s very current and real. I hope that all works out for them, with covid it couldn’t be a worse time to have homes damaged. My thoughts and prayers are with them 🙏

  3. Hi, Michel. I have lived in Florida since 1995. One hurricane caused our power to go off for six days. After that, they did a major upgrade to the power grid. Another storm caused a week of power outage and blew some roof tiles off. The damage was covered by insurance. Usually, the storms don’t amount to much. We had a little rain off and on today. I feel bad for the people in Louisiana whose homes are damaged, especially since they will have to find a place to stay during the pandemic.

      1. Many people have generators, batteries, solar batteries, gas grills, flashlights, coolers, bottled water, hurricane shutters…By June, most people in hurricane zones are prepared. I have only lost power in two hurricanes since I came to Florida in 1995.

    1. Thank you, Kate, for sharing your thoughts. When Katrina hit New Orleans, Louisiana, a few years ago, the suffering was unimaginable! The streets became rivers with bodies floating in them. They have strengthened the levees, so maybe that prevented flooding. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. 🙂 Cheryl

    1. Some scientists say that greater extremes of weather are the result of global warming. I am not sure about that, but it does seem that storm severity is increasing. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I hope you are enjoying your weekend. ❤ Cheryl

  11. Thank you, Murali, for your thoughtful comments. The people in Louisiana and parts of Texas who were in the path of Laura are suffering…loss of power (which may go on for months), homes damaged and destroyed, flooding, and 15 deaths. Florida has not had any storm damage so far. The hurricane season is pretty much over by October first. We hope for the best! 🙂 Take care! Cheryl

  13. Rishika, thank you for your kind and thoughtful response to the poem. We are fine, but many are suffering in Louisiana and parts of Texas. There will be government aid that should help a lot, but for those whose homes are damaged or destroyed and who must go to shelters in schools and churches, the covid19 threat is increased.     1. Thank you, Subbashini, for sharing your thoughts. I heard today that the death toll is at 18, with half of those deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning from poorly ventilated generators. The storm and wildfire seasons in the US will be over soon. People worldwide are very ready for the pandemic to end!

    1. Misae, I called my niece who lives in the Florida panhandle. They had some minor flooding from Hurricane Sally, and homeowners’ insurance will cover most of the damage. Thank you for asking. I am glad it did not, as predicted, hit Louisiana again after all the damage done there by Laura. We are almost done with the hurricane season! 🙂
