    1. My next-door neighbors are a wonderful Ukrainian American family with five children and big extended families. Her mother barely got out of Kyiv at the beginning of the war. We have a large Ukrainian American community here. We also have Russian Americans living here. My neighbor is good friends with a RussianAmerican family who live down the street. I have two adopted Russian children. We all get along.

      I empathize with both the Ukrainians, who have suffered death and destruction in their country, and with the common people of Russia who are also suffering and dying in this awful war. It will be a massive task to rebuild Ukraine. Many Ukrainians will probably never return. Things will never be the same! The Ukrainians, though, are very determined and hard-working people. I am sure they will be able to rebuild their country and their broken lives.

      1. Cheryl, thanks for sharing your own experience in living with Ukrainian and Russian Americans. How do the common people on both sides of this divide deal with such antagonism? Only time will tell.

  10. Beautiful poem Cheryl. We have to stop the atrocities od this war. We saw many Ukrainians when we were in Poland a few days ago. It was at least comforting to know they have a place to go where they can work, easily communicate and integrate, but I know they’re only thinking of their home. Maggie

    1. Thank you for sharing your experiences in Poland, Maggie. ❤ I often wonder how many refugees will return to Ukraine when the war is over. Many are in Poland, but others are spread out all over the world. My wonderful next-door neighbors are from Ukraine, but they have been here for many years, and their large extended family lives nearby.

      1. I grew up in Manitoba which has always had a large Ukrainian population and recently took in quite a few refuges. I think many will return once it is safe to do so, the country will need to rebuild.
